The year 2014 was declared the EU-Russia Year of Science and solemnly opened in November 2013 by the Russian Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Livanov, and the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn. The framework of the EU-Russia Year of Science offers the unique opportunity to highlight EU-Russia cooperation in the field of science and innovation. At the same time it is also a perfect possibility to get familiar with the broad culture and history of Russian regions. As there are many Russian Regions that participate actively in the EU-Russia Year of Science we want to highlight these regions and their potential for STI cooperation with Europe.

  • Nizhny Novgorod Region

    The capital of Nizhny Novgorod Region was founded by the Grand Duke of Vladimir Juri Vsevolodovich at the confluence of the rivers Volga and Oka in 1221. From 1392 on it was part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow for which it served as a fortress against the Tatars. After the conquest of Kasan by Tsar Ivan the Terrible in 1552 Nizhny Novgorod became an important trading place along the trading route between Russia and the East.

  • Krasnodar Region

    Krasnodar Region (Krasnodarskij Kraj), also known as Kuban Region due to its geographical position near the Kuban River, lies in the South of Russia along the Black Sea coast. The territory of the region is characterised by its huge and unique natural diversity you can discover when you travel along the Black Sea or through the Caucasian mountains. Because of its Mediterranean climate, it is an appropriate place for agriculture.

  • Archangelsk Region

    Archangelsk Region – named after its capital Archangelsk – is one of the most northern regions of Russia located near the White Sea. The city of Archangelsk was founded by order of Tsar Ivan IV in 1584 around the Michailo-Archangelsky monastery.

  • Tomsk Region

    The city of Tomsk was founded by the order of Tsar Boris Godunov in 1604 as a military fortress. Since 1804 it has been one of the most important administrative centres of Siberia, since the Tomsk Governate once comprised the territory of Altay region, Novosibirsk region, Kemerovo region and parts of Northern Kazakhstan as well as parts of Krasnoyarsk region. In the 1830s Tomsk gained in importance with the discovery of gold.

  • Krasnoyarsk Region

    Krasnoyarsk Region (Krasnoyarski Krai) is a very special Russian region at the boarder to Eastern Siberia. With regard to its geographical area it is the second largest federal subject of the Russian Federation. It is six times larger than Germany, for example. But there live only 3 million people. At the same time it is a very rich region. Besides various metals and coals it has enormous resources of oil and gas. So its major industrial branches are energy and oil refining, non-ferrous metallurgy and forestry.
