The EuroScience Open Forum "Science builds bridges" (ESOF) was held in Copenhagen on June, 21-26, 2014. It is one of the major events in the world of science within EU and is an interdisciplinary platform for showcasing the latest innovations and promotion of the public debate on science and technology. The forum gathered over 4.5 thsd visitors; scientists, policymakers, entrepreneurs and journalists.
One of the seminars focused on cooperation within science and technology between the EU and Russia. Patrick Vittet Philippe, an Expert of the Department of Research and Innovation of the European Commission stressed the importance of the implementation of joint research and development. He mentioned Russia as the most active non-EU country among the participants of the two previous framework programs. Russia surpassed the United States and China by the number of projects supported. EU has allocated about 31 mln. euro on the implementation of joint projects with Russia. Patrick Vittet Philippe expressed hope for further successful cooperation, which will improve both the scientific interaction and the relationship between Russia and the EU as a whole.
According to Patrick Vittet Philippe, there are a few challenges in research cooperation between Russia and the EU:
The Russian scientific community was represented by the Executive Director of International Center for Innovation in Science Technology and Education Kuklina Irina Rudolfovna, Vice-rector for Academic and International Affairs of Tomsk Polytechnic University Chuchalin Alexander. They stressed the importance of the scientific cooperation between Russia and the EU.
